Disciplinarity, multi- and interdisciplinarity in Area Studies

School of Advanced Study: Dean's Seminar
Disciplinarity, multi- and interdisciplinarity in Area Studies

10 October 2012, 12:30 - 14:00

Dr Bala Chandramohan, (Institute of Commonwealth Studies)
The presentation will discuss knowledge taxonomies used in academia. How are ‘disciplines’ established and the terms multi- and inter-disciplinarity used? Is disciplinary pursuit of knowledge more rigorous than that of multi-or trans-disciplinary ones? Examples of ‘area’ studies (geographical or activity-based) would be used in the discussion. How does REF treat disciplinarity and multi/interdisciplinarity?
