Sri Lanka Journals OnLine

Sri Lanka Journals OnLine (SLJOL) is a service to provide access to Sri Lankan published research, and increase worldwide knowledge of indigenous scholarship.SLJOL is a database of journals published in Sri Lanka, covering the full range of academic disciplineswith the aim of giving greater visibility to the participating journals, and to the research they convey. Sri Lanka Journals OnLine (SLJOL) was initiated in August 2008. It is a project supported by the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publication (INASP).


Journals are selected for inclusion on SLJOL using the following criteria:

1.They are scholarly in content, and contain original research (in addition to other content)

2.Their content is peer reviewed and quality controlled

3.They are able to provide all content for inclusion on SLJOL (tables of contents, abstracts and PDFs of full text) in electronic format

4.They are published within Sri Lanka. Management of publishing strategy, business development and production operation are all run from Sri Lanka.

SLJOL provides information on each participating journal, including aims and scope, contact details and general information. It also provides Tables of contents and abstracts (where available) for all articles published within these journals. Many full text articles are also available.

All the material on SLJOL is free to view, search and browse, however copyright of all content is retained by the journals or authors - each journals will need to give permission for any use or re-use of the content that falls outside Fair Use.

The journals are listed alphabetically, to help researchers find journals of relevance, and allow browsing of the journals and the website also has a sophisticated searching tool, to help researchers locate articles of interest and relevance to their area of study. Email alerts also provide a reminder service, to alert researchers to newly-published issues from their selected titles.

Researchers should also take note of the Research Support Tool which accompanies the abstracts of each article. The links from the red box to the right of each Abstract screen are designed to support the reading and use of the abstracts. Tools offered include information about the authors, quick and easy links to allow identification of further articles from other websites, definition of difficult terms using online dictionaries (simply click twice on any word in the abstract), and the automatic generation of citations to the article using "Capture Cite."

Bangladesh Journals OnLine (BanglaJOL) provides free access to a collection of over 75 academic journals published in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Journals OnLine (BanglaJOL) is a service to provide access to Bangladesh published research, and increase worldwide knowledge of indigenous scholarship.


The journals included cover a range of topics, are scholarly in content and contain original research and are peer reviewed. While there is an emphasis upon scientific topics, there is also coverage of health and development topics, and this resource is recommended for discovering articles which may have been missed by the more mainstream journal indexes.

Bangladesh Journals OnLine (BanglaJOL) was initiated in June 2007 and officially launched in September 2007. It is a project supported by the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publication (INASP). It aims to promote the awareness and use of Bangladesh-published journals in all disciplines by providing access to tables of contents (TOCs), abstracts and full text on the Internet. BanglaJOL uses the Open Journals System created by the Public Knowledge Project based in Canada.

The Journals Online project is part of the Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERii) which provides support to researchers around the world through access to information and training and support for the use of information.

Open access journals - South East Asia and the Caribbean

Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) offers free open access to backfiles of two leading journals, The Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Southeast Asia and Oceania (Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde)  and the New West Indian Guide (Nieuwe West-Indische Gids).

The two journals have existed since 1853 and 1919, respectively. The contents of all back issues, mostly full text, will also be made freely available through the journals' web archives. Published continuously since 1853, Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde is focuses on the linguistics, anthropology, and history of Southeast Asia, and more specifically of Indonesia. It appears in four issues, running a total of roughly 600 pages annually. The large majority of articles, brief notices, and book reviews are published in English.

The New West Indian Guide is the oldest scholarly journal on the Caribbean, published continuously since 1919. It presents English-language articles in the fields of anthropology, art, archaeology, economics, geography, geology, history, international relations, linguistics, literature, music, political science and sociology. It includes the world's most complete review section on Caribbean books, covering some 150 books each year.

Kotuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online; Open Access journal from Royal Society of New Zelaand

Kotuitui is an online opan access (free to view) journal published by the Royal Society of New Zealand and hosted by Taylor and Francis.

The journal aims to showcase the increasing number of collaborative research endeavours across the social sciences. Although of particular relevance to New Zealand, the journal’s subject matter is of worldwide relevance and interest to researchers in universities, research institutes, and other centres. The Maori name ‘Kotuitui’ means ‘interweaving’, and reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the journal.


Kotuitui publishes original research papers, short communications, book reviews, and letters. Although the journal predominately highlights research in the New Zealand context, international submissions are welcomed. The journal’s subject matter includes contributions from long-established fields (including psychology, economics, human geography, sociology, education, political science, anthropology, social work, population studies, and history); as well as more recent disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields such as public policy, development studies, conflict resolution, gender studies, international relations, security studies, human rights, cultural and ethnic studies, ethics, criminology, health, sustainability, communications, and media studies.

The journal is freely available online, facilitating the distribution of New Zealand social science knowledge both nationally and internationally. Papers with likely high impact will be fast-tracked for rapid publication.

Illustrated London News Collection. New Zealand collection 1842-1902


The Illustrated News Collection  ia an interesting digitisation project from the University of Waikato Library who have scanned all images and text relating to New Zealand from the Illustrated London News during this period.

The Illustrated London News was a picture newspaper that ran for over 150 years, its first issue appearing on 14 May 1842. The paper was published weekly until 1971 when it became a monthly. It provided a general source of news but its main appeal lay in its use of woodcuts and engravings to enhance the text. Later, photographs were introduced to provide the illustrations. The paper was highly popular and successful and, while it had an emphasis on Britain, world events were covered, especially where Britain was involved or affected. To this end, Britain's imperial interests and the emerging colony of New Zealand received some coverage especially during the period of the New Zealand Wars.

This database produced by the University of Waikato Library includes scanned images of the all the text and illustrations that refer to events in New Zealand during the first sixty years from volume 1 in 1842 to volume 121 in 1902. The entries can be searched by keyword or you can browse in chronological order.

Key topics covered include social, economic and political history. The Senate House Library also has access to the printed copies of the Illustrated London News.

Australian Studies: latest issue

First appearing in 1988, 'Australian Studies' covers a wide range of disciplines (including geography, history, law, political science, economics, literature, the media, sociology, science etc). The journal has established itself internationally as a respected context for the publication of scholarship and comment on many aspects of the Australian scene, and is DEST recognised in Australia.

The journal's particular aim is to foster innovative critical approaches, and to encourage connections between traditionally discrete areas of research. Scholarly contributions to general issues are always welcomed, while contributions to themed issues are also commissioned. 'Australian Studies' is a fully-refereed journal, enjoying the support of a distinguished international body of scholars.

The African Journal Archive is a retrospective digitisation project of full-text journal articles published in Africa, in the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, providing access to a multi-disciplinary, multi-country digital archive of Africa’s research and cultural heritage contained in its journal literature.

This project is hosted by Sabinet Gateway with funding from the from the Carnegie Corporation. It offers free access to historic backfiles of a collection of journals published in Africa from a range of subject areas covering the sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Topics covered in the most detail are agriculture, botany, zoology, history, law, education, politics, medicine, geology, most recently published issues are not hosted on the African Journal Archive links are provided to publishers websites.


This is a complement to the African Journal Online website http://ajol.info/ which also offers links to African published materials. This is an independent project again covering all subject areas. Although there may be some overlap the sites does seem at the moment to have distinct content.

Australian Studies (journal)

The UK published journal  Australian Studies has been in abeyance for a couple of years, but was recently successfully relaunched as a free online resource under the aegis of the National Library of Australia.

This first edition of Australian Studies as an electronic journal comprises two special groups of articles. The first, by current and recently completed postgraduate students, began as a call for papers in May 2007 for what was then envisaged as a themed edition of Australian Studies, focusing upon the topic of ‘captivity’. The choice of subject was prompted in part by postgraduate research interests at the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies (King’s College London) in convict-era Australia, when captivity – or avoidance of it – was a defining characteristic of life for thousands of men and women. But the five ‘captivity’ essays included here escape from these initially narrow conceptual confines, and instead investigate the theme of captivity from the 1830s to the present day.


The second group of articles is a selection from papers submitted for the 2007 BASA Essay Prize. This is a prize awarded on an occasional basis for current and recently
completed postgraduate students who have submitted papers, on any topic relevant to Australian studies broadly defined, to the BASA journal, Australian Studies. The first BASA Essay Prize was awarded in 2007 to Eddy Rogers, now at the University of Guelph in Canada. His prize-winning essay is published here for the first time, along with a selection of other papers submitted during that year.

In subsequent (2010) editions of Australian Studies, the focus will shift from the recent work of postgraduate students to the significant body of material generated by recent BASA conferences – the ‘Australian Lives’ conference held at the University of Exeter’s new Cornwall Campus, near Falmouth, in September 2006, and the ‘Changing Australia’ conference at Royal Holloway College, University of London, in September 2008. Articles from these two major international conferences will appear in the two editions of Australian Studies scheduled for 2010, along with a number of other articles ‘in the queue’ awaiting publication.

History In Action - Department of History at The UWI, St Augustine

In a greater effort to bring local, regional and international attention to the scholarship of history, the Department of History at The UWI, St Augustine has launched an in-house journal - History in Action.


Contributions are solicited from a wide cross-section of scholars and advanced graduate students in and outside the Department of History, undergraduate students with works of exceptional quality as well as non-university researchers and writers of history.

The journal, which will be published annually and made available via the UWI institutional repository (UWISpace), will be of considerable benefit to a wide cross-section of scholars and students, libraries in addition to members of the public interested in history.

UWISpace is a platform being implemented by UWI’s Main Library to capture, store, index, preserve and redistribute research material in digital formats. The journal will be part of an interactive website embracing available multimedia and web 2.0 technologies (RSS feed, blogs, podcasts, video streams, hyperlinked resources, etc.)

History is not only based on written records but on all human actions, including those recorded orally and reflected exclusively in the archaeological record.

The journal’s editorial committee is inviting diverse contributions on documentary history, archaeology, personal narratives (based on oral interviews), ethnography, historical geography, historical linguistics and cultural landscapes.

Contributors are actively encouraged to submit multimedia data in support of their respective papers, should the need arise. In order to expedite the process of publication, this journal will not be peer-reviewed. However, all submissions will be assessed by the editor and members of the editorial committee to determine their suitability for publication. The Editor reserves the right to edit all submissions.

Contributors, especially students, are gently advised to guard against plagiarism and copyright violations. Full paper submissions must be no more than 2,500 words and must each have a bibliography and endnotes. Small States Digest

A free online newsletter published by the Commonwealth Secretariat, Small States Digest carries short articles on issues of concern to small states.

The Commonwealth defines small states as sovereign states with a population size of 1.5 million people or less. Larger member countries – Botswana, Jamaica, The Gambia, Lesotho, Namibia and Papua New Guinea are designated as small states because they share many characteristics of small states. Thirty-two of the 54 member countries of the Commonwealth member are small states.

Small States Digest Issue 2 has just been published and articles include:

• Transforming Guyana’s economy while combating climate change: a low-carbon development strategy
• Globalisation at a crossroad? , and
• Monetary Policy Transmission Work in Pacific Islands: A Study of Vanuatu

Small States Digest Issue 1 was published in April and included the following articles:

Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History: Tamerlane Award

The Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History, an online-only journal published by the Johns Hopkins University Press, has announced it will award a prize for an outstanding article by a young scholar.

The Tamerlane Award will be given every three years to a contributor who has never published a full book or monograph. Academics from the Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia will be eligible for the honor.

“We want to encourage scholars from developing countries to submit articles to the journal in hopes of winning this award,” said Towson University history professor Patricia Romero, founder and editor of the journal. “Our focus of colonialism and imperialism opens the doors for all sorts of topics from across the world.”

The award takes its name from Tamerlane, a 14th-century conqueror of much of western and central Asia. Also known as Timur, he was a patron of the arts and much of the architecture he commissioned remains today in modern Uzbekistan.

The first award will be announced in 2011 for articles published between 2008 and 2010. The winner will receive a small honorarium.

A committee of editorial board members will choose the winning essay. Committee members will be Johns Hopkins University professor Franklin Knight, Antoinette Burton, former co-editor of Journal of Women’s Studies, and History Chair at the University of Illinois, and John Lonsdale, Emeritus Professor of Modern African History at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

Founded in 2000, the interdisciplinary journal features essays covering the period from the tenth century to modern times that deal with broad aspects of colonialism and imperialism. The journal is published three times a year.

Anti-Slavery journals available online in British Periodicals e-resource

Library members interested in slavery may be interested in looking at the British Periodicals database, available in the library.

ProQuest's British Periodicals is a large database of periodicals, charting the development and growth of the periodical press in Britain from its origins in the 17th century to the Victorian 'age of periodicals' and beyond. The database includes digital copies of each page of the titles included, in a high resolution bitonal facsimile, and includes illustrations and advertisements. The full text of each publication can be searched.

Some titles of specific interest include:

• Anti-Slavery Reporter (1825-1833)
• Anti-Slavery Reporter and Aborigines' Friend (1840-1931) and
• Freed-man. A Monthly Magazine Devoted to the Interests of the Freed Coloured People (1865-1868)

The ability to search the full text of these titles provides much benefit to users as well as helping preserve the print copies retained. Access to databases is via the ULRLS Libraries webpage at http://www.ulrls.lon.ac.uk/resources/databases.asp

Electronic Journals on Africa

An initiative arising from the 2008 Paris-Nanterres meeting of the European Librarians on African Studies (ELIAS) is a Wikipedia listing of African Studies journals available online.

The initial list was compiled from lists held by four institutions: Uppsala, Leiden, Frankfurt and ASAUK, creating a comprehensive list of more than one thousand African studies journals.

Locating this list within the digital encyclopedia Wikipedia has two advantages:
-the list of African Studies Journals is now available for a wide audience
-the list can be expanded and improved by anybody with knowledge about e-journals on Africa.

This is not a definitive list: it is work "under construction". The list will be expanded (ISBN etc) and updated in the future. It would be nice if all African Studies Journals would get their "own" page in Wikipedia, like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aequatoria and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Affairs
