Our ground floor book Returns Box is moving to the South Block reception from Monday 7th November.
The Returns Box can be used at anytime, including out of Library opening hours, but is cleared only once a day (just after the library opens in the morning).
The move to the South Block, is being done because the North Block is being closed for refurbishment from next week.

Lift now in operation!
With a sigh of relief I am pleased to announce that lift access is now available between 4th, 5th and 6th floors of the Senate House Library.
The old lift was stripped out in the refurbishment process and it has taken a little while to set up list access. This has now been done and the lift went operational yesterday morning.
IHR lift that will, for the time being at least, act as the public lift within Senate House Library will open to readers shortly after I send this email.
The sets of double doors on the 4th, 5th and 6th floors will be wedged open. New secondary doors have been fitted to screen off the stairwell (staircase 7). These doors have been fitted with “screamer” style alarms and obviously signs that instruct readers not to use the doors except in an emergency. For those who may not already know I will leave instructions at the Enquiry Desk as to how the alarms can be re-set in the event of activation and will also tell those whose offices are nearest on each floor.
Please ask library staff for directions. The lift is located next to the Convocation Hall (ex-Exhibition Hall) on the 4th floor, in area 529 by the French collection on the 5th floor, and adjacent to the Commonwealth Studies collection and start of the Philosophy sequence on the 6th floor. The new lift (like the old one) unfortunately does not serve the 7th floor.

With IHR moves and moves of periodicals from Senate House Library ongoing we are about to start the next phase which is the main collection moves across the various parts of the Senate House Library. This next stage will have two teams of movers working at the same time, as nearly every part of the collection is being moved. The Institute of Commonwealth Studies Collection is currently scheduled to be moved between the 15th and 17th of August, and will be moved to the 6th Floor, North of the Senate House Library (entry from the 4th Floor South Block). IHR Library moves
Please be aware that the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) and the library are moving. Details of moves are available at: http://ihrrelocation.wordpress.com/
The move of the library collections going into closed access started yesterday. As this affects material on all floors there is likely to be a lot of disruption and the lift will be difficult to access. The move of the collections remaining on open access is expected to begin from Tuesday 26th July and the library will close completely between 28th July and 2nd August. Details of new locations of the collections are available here: http://www.history.ac.uk/library/collections/collection-locations

Important information: Senate House Libraries moves – STAGE 3
Senate House Libraries moves – STAGE 3
July 2011:
Starting from Monday July 11, 2011, we will begin the 3rd and final stage of the Library moves, dealing with collections in the publicly accessible areas of the library.
The first part this move will take place throughout July. During this time, periodical sequences in the 3rd Floor South Block and temporary North Block areas on the Ground and 2nd Floors will be relocated to the Library Tower.
In future, access to all periodical collections will be via the stack fetching service although please note that many periodicals titles are now also available in digital form. (Please also note that recent issues of periodicals titles are NOT affected by these moves).
Additionally during July, the IHR Library will re-locate temporarily from its current location in the North Block of Senate House to the 3rd Floor South Block.
These moves may mean that specific items in these collections are unavailable for short periods while they are in transit, normally no longer than 1 – 2 days.
A schedule of these moves will be posted on the library website. This will enable you to see which collections are scheduled to move on particular days.
Please refer to the library enquiry desk if you require further information or advice.
More information on the second part of these moves in August will follow shortly.

Senate House Libraries moves - STAGE 2
We will shortly be moving onto Stage 2 of the Library moves, which involves the reorganisation of closed access areas in the Library Tower and Basement areas. While this is largely invisible to our library users, it does affect items that users request through the ‘Stack Fetching Service’. It may mean that specific items in the collections being moved are unavailable for short periods while they are in transit, normally no longer than 1 – 2 days. This will have a limited impact on Commonwealth Studies collections but at times these will be impacted by moves going on around them, limiting staff access to collections.
These moves begin on June 6th and will continue until the end of month. A schedule of these moves will be posted on the library website at the beginning of June. This will enable you to see which collections are scheduled to move on particular days.
Please refer to the library enquiry desk if you require further information or advice. Alternatively you can contact us via the following page: http://www.shl.lon.ac.uk/library/contacts

Senate House Library moves - Stage 1
Senate House Library moves - Stage 1
The first stage of the library moves began on May 11, 2011. This is part of a four month programme which will culminate in the re-opening of the newly refurbished library in its entirety on Floors 4-7 of Senate House in time for the new academic session. When the moves are completed, the temporary library facilities in the Small Hall (where the Commonwealth Studies collection is currently held) and the North Block areas will be discontinued.
The first stage of the moves involves moving certain categories of low-use material from the Library’s closed access stacks in the Tower/Basement areas to our offsite storage Depository in Egham, Surrey. This will take approximately 4 weeks to complete. While the items are in transit, they will be temporarily unavailable. Normally, this will only be for between 24-48 hours, so please check with library staff if your item falls into one of the categories listed below.
These moves will ensure that we can retain more frequently used items and specialist collections on site in central London.
Access to the collections being sent to Egham is still readily available through the stack fetching service and items requested are normally available 24 hours after the request is lodged.

Advance notice: 2011 Collection moves
Collection moves will be taking place at Senate House Library from May 2011 to the end of September 2011.
These essential moves are necessary in order to accommodate the return of the Library into the newly refurbished areas of Senate House, as well as manage space for ongoing building work elsewhere. The moves will be on a grand scale and entail relocating hundreds of thousands of books in a number of interconnected sequences.
As a result some of our collections will become temporarily unavailable while they are in transit. It will also be necessary to close the Library for sometime in the summer. More details and specific dates will be published when they are confirmed.
We will do everything we can to minimise disruption to users and to provide advance warning. If you are making a special journey to the Library between May 2011 and the end of September 2011 please check our website for the latest information and confirm with staff that the item(s) or collections you wish to consult are available for your visit.
The 2011 collection moves into the newly refurbished areas will enable us to offer a hugely upgraded study environment and collection space. This will provide a greatly improved experience for users, with new desks, infrastructure and navigation, all within a unified Library space.
If you have any questions please do contact us: http://www.shl.lon.ac.uk/library/contacts

Your feedback!!! 6 weeks later
Its now over 6 weeks since we re-opened within the Senate House Library. We're largely settled in to our new space now, though a few small snagging problems remain. We'd like to hear your feedback on what you think of the changes, anything positive of course, but also anything that still needs fixing or improvement.
If you're in the Library feedback forms are available at all service points - otherwise add a comment or please email your thoughts to icommlib@sas.ac.uk.
A summary of any comments and our responses will follow on this blog

Farewell to Russell Square
Friday of last week we moved the final crate and items of furniture from 28 Russell Square to our new home on the ground floor of the Senate House building. Having being located in its Russell Square premises since its inception it is a big change for the Institute and for the Library.
We're now unpacking and arranging material, and arranging for reader tables and chairs to be placed in the new area. Final work on building a counter and security works remain to be done so visitors in the next few days may not be able to gain access to our new space. In the meantime please do visit the Small Hall, on the ground floor of Senate House. A fetch and enquiry service will be operating from this point until we are fully open.
